For better, not for worse

Here's a hopeful perspective that maybe, just maybe, things are starting to look a bit brighter in this dismal economy, as exhibited in a comment on my New York Production blog:

As a former HR (and now IC Manager) recently told me, some good can actually come out of this mess - people who are made redundant can go on to bigger and better things, whether it be a career change or starting their own business.

I know a live events producer who was recently let go from his company and is now successfully working the freelance route while having more time to pursue his music on the side. In that same batch of lay-offs was an Editor friend of mine - after commuting into Manhattan for nearly 20 years, he's now enjoying the freelance life editing out of his house in the suburbs and spending more time with his young son.

So in spite of the bleak outlook worldwide and the abnormal weather patterns that have hit the UK this season (the weather hasn't been much better in New York!), this doesn't necessarily have to be the winter of discontent.
