AP updates its social media guidelines
27 July, 2012 - 09:07
The updates include a new section on live-tweeting news and an updated section regarding how to connect with newsmakers on social media sites.
According to the guidelines, journalists are permitted to live-tweet public news events. However, their "first obligation is to provide full details to the appropriate news desk." They are forbidden to share "exclusive material" before giving the wire an opportunity to publish it first.
It's fine to build social media connections with politicians and news sources, however staffers need to "make this kind of contact with figures on both sides of controversial issues."
Also, staffers are discouraged to post comments on newsmakers' public pages.
