Major PR gaffe for Mini

3 February, 2012 - 10:36
An advertising agency for BMW paid to name a cold weather front "Cooper" after the Mini Cooper. The result? A major PR blunder.

Germany's meteorology institute allows the sponsorship of weather systems.

BMW's PR stunt went very wrong after the winter weather front led to dozens of deaths, mainly in Poland and Ukraine. Hundreds are being treated for hypothermia and frostbite.

On its website, Sassenbach - the ad agency involved - says naming the front Cooper was a "wind-and weather-proof idea."

The Munich-based agency says it is no longer commenting on the unfortunate correlation between the progress of the harsh weather and the automobile it aimed to publicize.

Meanwhile, BMW is apologizing for the PR stunt.
