Vassar College acceptance letter causes heartache and confusion

3 February, 2012 - 10:34
New York's prestigious Vassar College erroneously informed early decision applicants that they had been accepted to the school - when in fact, they were rejected.

A special website for early decision applicants went live on Friday containing the mistaken admissions information.

In the 30 minutes before the error was corrected, 122 applicants logged onto the site. 46 people read an accurate letter informing them of their acceptance to the college; the 76 other applicants read the mistaken letter.

Two hours after the mistake was corrected, Vassar sent apology emails to the affected applicants.

In a statement, Vassar President Catharine Hill, said:

"We understand how very upsetting this is for those students who viewed the inaccurate decisions that we posted online, and we are very sorry to have added to the overall stress of the college admissions process for these students and their families."
